My name is Shane and I'm an addict. My clean date is January 18, 1990 and I got clean in Portland Oregon after 20 years of using. My story is not special or unique. I started getting loaded when I was very young. After much walking through and living in hell I was given the chance to do something different. That chance came to me through the program of Narcotics Anonymous. I can sit here and say "My Higher Power brought me here" or "My Higher Power worked through other people to get me here" but that really isn't that important now for me. What is important is that I am here (in N.A.) now and I make the choice to stay here (in recovery) now on a daily basis.
I also have a sponsor, who has a sponsor, and I also only go to N.A. meetings. I only work the Steps, Traditions and Concepts for Service from this program. I only do step work from NA literature. And I have made the choice since I got clean to attend this programs meetings. This program saved my life, so I owe my life and gratitude to this program. I have worked through the Steps and Traditions 6 times so far, and am currently working through them again making this my 7th time through. Like what the literature says at the end of Step Twelve: "We do recover to live clean and happy lives. Welcome to N.A. The steps do not end here. The steps are a new beginning!" I was told what this means is that when I finish with the steps I move onto the Traditions. When I finish with the Traditions I start back over with the steps. And that is what I've done throughout my recovery. Since the Concepts for NA Service were published, I also go through that after the Traditions and then start back with the steps.
The one thing I must remember is that this is a 12 step, 12 Tradition, and 12 Concept program. And for me, the only way to make any lasting progress and positive change has been to work the program that way. In order for me to get to a place of peeling away all the layers of the onion to get to the core, that takes time, work, determination, trust, faith, hope, honesty, courage, willingness, being fearless, open-mindedness, the list goes on and on. And like I've heard said many times and read this is a simple program that covers all of my problem - the disease of active addiction.
So, if you are needing some help to get through the Steps then I am willing to help so I can give back what was given to me. If you are willing to do the work, then I am willing to take the time to help guide you through this journey.
